Subaru's father has to have a reason for that. Maybe because when Subaru first tried robotics it simply hurt him? Then having the promise he made with his father shattered with a reattempt to go back into robotics is like saying you love your father. Then say you hate his interest in fishing in secret.
What I don't understand is why did Subaru's father tell him about the tournament? Is he testing to see if Subaru is keeping to his word? After hearing that Subaru "has nothing to do with it anymore". Then finding him testing his robot is a big slap in the face. Maybe I'm just hoping for a "
dang well good justification" for that ending then just "I hate your interests in robots and want you fishing with me".
Still, hitting your son like that isn't right at all..
