Many here are of the opinion that they have no reason to hide their passion for anime, but I think the bad reputation that comes with being an anime fan is more or less everywhere the same (even in Japan). The only difference might lay in their selfconfidence and the fact they dont care as much about wierd reaction from others that may pop up here and there.

This bad reputation however is something that I wonder about, since i would say about 20% of the people I know watch/watched anime more or less frequently. Its not a majourity but a pretty big part (which would of course not be so big if only counting rather passionate fans like myself). Dispite that we have to fight agains mentalities like "anime=pokemon=only for kids or stupid nerds" (here in germany i think the anime=porn mentality is not that big).

Sometimes I talk about anime with guys i know like them as well, but only very few times and there was only one person who shared my taste in anime and he dont watch quite as much as i do.
Probably all of my friends know Im into anime somehow because even without me announcing it as friends they found out sooner or later, but the rather typical reaction is the same i got from a friend just recently, who said that "I should rather get me a desktop wallpaper of some semi-naked model instead of one with anime on it".

I am a freshmen in university now and even though we inroduced ourselfes and mentioned our hobbies there was no way in hell I would tell them im into anime because that would instantly put me down on the ladder unless a great majourity of out group just so happened to be animefans as well which is impossible. If I should meet someone there whos also into anime, i might as well talk to him about it, but other than that i wont mention it and thats how things work for me on this side of the world.

People here who tell they dont see a reason to hide it still cant tell me watching anime is seen as much as as a hobby as playing soccer or tennis.
