The show, so far, does attempt to be telling its own story. Other than preconceived notions from the character designs, there's nothing to suggest parody at all and everything to suggest that it is genuinely trying to tell its own narrative.
I've always found that weird. Something just being silly is generally frowned upon, whereas people are willing to justify everything by claiming status of parody.
