Well, there is Option C:
The guy or girl (whichever viewpoint the story is from) isn't dense... so to make things interesting, thousands of hurdles are thrown in their way, and that usually leads to a thing called drama (or in other situations, comedy)
... but the dense protagonists sell far better. So, are you going to go with an idea that sorta new and therefore hasn't been tried out (i.e., neither party is dense and we can get somewhere early on) and you have no idea how well it will work, or an idea that has been used thousands of times before, can be frustrated, but STILL IS KNOWN TO MAKE MONEY?
As fans, we have seen the storyline thousands of times, and the authors too may be sick of it, but they know that readers will buy it... and at the end of the day, it's all about how you get food on the table in RL
