Amati wants to buy Horo, correct? Does he want to buy her like a piece of property? Or just buy her freedom so Horo can chose to go wherever she desires (Which is hopefully still with Lawrence) If it is the first one, then I have only one thing to say.

Well, I'm certain Amati's intention is not the former, because he brings up the deal as a precondition for his proposing to Horo, which means that she of course has every right to refuse even if he does manage to fulfill his end of the contract. However, to an observer, it would indeed seem like he were buying Horo as a piece of property, since he is essentially trying to do her a favor so great that she would have difficulty refusing his proposal. Of course, this is all Amati's theorizing and, like the novel suggests, Amati is taking a huge gamble by being so presumptuous without knowing just how deep the bond between Horo and Lawrence runs. But just watch what happens. After all, if no complications arise to shake Lawrence's confidence a bit, it wouldn't be much of a story, would it?
