Wow, I really liked the episode.

What got me thinking was why in the world would fairies hate electromagnetic waves. As if their presence was conditioned with the spread of electricity use. Humans would probably be more numerous if they had electricity, their population would eventually go back up. So the reason why fairies would ultimately leave would be because the habitat got overcrowded. Same thing happens if you leave planes to grow back into forests, consequentially harvest less food from the soil, and let wild animals take over. Someone's got to be the dominant force in the environment.

Also, humans are basically addicted to fairies at this point. If fairy density goes down, human numbers might rise, but having been nursed all this time they will become more prone to extinction. If fairy density goes up, humans will still exist, but in very moderate numbers. It could be that fairies are somehow a consequence of human overpopulation. Or it could be that humans resigned to fairy oversight because they lost their human tendency to fight against nature, which is more in line with the whole theme of Japan's postmodern, hedonist values taking over society.
