That's an interesting point -- my initial reaction to the episode was that they had undermined the humanizing effects of having the Argentine pilot narrate Episode 1 by making Argentum such obvious bad guys. (I had wondered whether Argentum would turn out to be a republic with a bad population problem and few resources, and Simulacrum an authoritarian, highly stratified society. Neither seems to be the case.) But now that I think about it, the soldier is shown to be clearly a victim rather than a monster, for whom we feel sorrow.
I'm extremely impressed that
Simoun
understands the concept of non-consensual gender identity imposed by society, let alone making it the chief object of horror in a work of mainstream entertainment.
