Your use of past series fails because past series never were conventional wars with human-like races. This is really the first time we have Macross Antagonists who are culturally conventional and have conventional concerns. Hell, they are really the first and only antagonists to have actually declared war. No where did any other Macross did war ever get declared, because no one else had the equivalence of culture like Windermere.

If you declared war, there is really only one way to end it. Winderemere are very normal people, doing horrible things just like every other people that dreamed of conquest. And they will suffer for it just like every other people that made that choice while overestimating themselves.
