As for answering how...... I wonder if you know what widescreen means. Do you know how sometimes when you see movies on your TV they have black bars on the top and bottom of the screen? That is widescreen. It is also called letterboxed.
You should be able to tell if your source is widescreen by playing it and using your eyes.
