Why would the comedy take away from the story? It's an integral part of the story as a whole - Mashima always does comedy. Everyone's fair game as being used for comedy in here - very very few characters in Mashima's stories ever escape having their faces distorted for comedic effect (so far, only Minerva And 'Tengu' in recent memory has really escaped).
