I don't even get the feeling that he has "such a low self-esteem", he's much too controlled and dedicated for that. Keep in mind, he's obviously defying his powerful father.
The way I see it he only wants to make sure that Miyuki's brocon doesn't cause her negative repercussions with her bloom classmates - which however looks like a very poor call to me. And well, now that it's out in the open, we'll see how things go.
