She took out money from her pocket and handed it to Hayate to buy a TV phone. Thats like over $300 in her pocket and she didn't look mad that Hayate broke her old phone. She probably doesn't need money because she can get anything she wants if she just asks. You can get some hints on why Maria is a maid in her profile page in volume one of manga
The mangaka wrote that he wanted to do a story about her past but I don't believe he did that yet.

Most of the blanks are from the manga in this episode and the translator did some research for us. They're also on Wrex's and Omni's blogs. Char Aznable and the gol**** one that I didn't get wasn't in the manga though. Of course I wouldn't get them by myself beside Orlando Bloom and Brad Pitt because I'm not into Japanese live action movies (and I find how Japanese people shorten names a little awkward at times)
