One of the reasons I'm figuring Kyon and Haruhi stay "tied" is that they're a complementary pair - kind of like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, or Gracie and George, ... Abbot & Costello ...
Without each other, their personalities are kind of unbalanced (imo, of course).
