It may be because I am a porcupine, but I understand Sorata's need to create a new distance between him and Shiina. Having a nopan dorm mate to look after is bad enough if she is not in love with you.
That said, there must be better ways to maintain distance than being a jerk. I am just not sure what. Hmm, how about going out with another girl? (Well, perhaps not so attractive after seeing Shiina and knives...)
