Judging by the projectile weapon's sound, it seems they haven't reached electromagnetic rail gun tech level.
In real life, the US Navy is currently testing has it's prototype rail gun weapons.

Hmmm... I don't think that's a very good idea at this point of the story... If its for the sake of better melee encounters, then it's pretty much unnecessary. lol.
