What if there's a reason he's dense? EG a mental block, or some hypnosis? It's quite possible that at some point in Ichika's life: either as a child or just after he was kidnapped, he was subjected to some hypnosis to erase or downplay those traumatic memories. And in the process someone (Chifuyu? Tabane?) also slipped in this denseness/fear aspect of other girls that prevents Ichika from managing a normal male relationship with a girl.
