Hrm, good question. Considering that she and Maria Eluka Nova are physically identical (save for the eyes), it's very possible they could be the same being. Perhaps Maria brought Kazuya back in time to encounter her past self, so he could a) stop the Nova War before it spirals out of control or b) realize how it all started. Now if it's choice A, and it means erasing the whole Nova War, that could create a temporal paradox that could destroy the Earth. And I'm pretty sure that's not how LDY intends to end the story. So it could more easily be choice B, and after the battle on Eluka ends, Kazuya and his friends encounter present day Maria, who apologizes for letting the situation degenerate as it did.
And now I'm wondering if Lucy knew about the Sovereign Novas way back in the 12th Nova Clash, for she spoke about the "brutal sisters" who feared those who inherited the Transcendent Will. And Erectar and her siblings are definitely brutal enough, so it could be Lucy was talking about them. Wouldn't that be ironic, LDY sliding in a plot point well before it became relevant. Could be.
