It was more than a year since I last used MacOS X to watch video, so I might very well be wrong about how to get MPlayer to run.
Also, prospective MPlayer users should read the "Interactive control" part of the manpage:

The three most useful keys are "v" to toggle subtitle visibility and "b" and "j" to cycle through available sub tracks.
