personally, I really appreciated the background on the guy. Normally, we get what we assume is generic every dude or random bully victim #infinity, toss some powers on them and move from there. Insight into who they are or how they think is thin. Here, we have a history of how his personality and ideology formed and what exactly those are.
I loved that it wasn't:
The world sucks -> I'm a badass
but instead was:
That is to say, there is a rhyme and a reason to what happens to him. It doesn't rely on a high degree of cynicism (to the point of paranoia) on the part of the reader by having other people do terrible shit without any benefit for themselves, without an explanation. More so, the mc acknowledges that rhyme and reason and adjusts his behavior accordingly, getting an edge on this tilted world.
I find him to be much more robust as a character than most mc are by the end of their series.
