Seems like it's similar to Age of Conan, you play the tutorial offline and than the rest is online only and subscription based.
I will say this, Square have lost their marbles if they think DQ9's multilayer is going to transition into an online subscription MMO... look @ the difference between Monster Hunter Tri and Monster Hunter 3 Portable.. and Tri wasn't subscription based...
