Reading the responses of people who haven't read the manga, and in my experience watching it with some people today, I've concluded.
Spoiler
for
Light's characterization, manga vs. anime
:
At least in this episode, people are getting the impression "Light is crazy, watch him to see what crazy things he does with the death note". In the manga it was way less "dark"--no booming thunder to announce Ryuk's arrival or what have you--and Light didn't giggle insanely in one scene. And in the first episode there was also very little set-up to allude to the fact that Light is a genius, and the phrasing of some of his statements understated the role of his moral belief in becoming Kira. I wonder if they were pressured to clearly hint at who was the "bad guy" in the anime? Or does Madhouse really not get that the ambiguity is part of the manga's excellence. The OP and ED kinda show they do, especially the ED, though....
Hey, did Animanda use the phrase "bumping off the bad guys" out of curiosity?
