Yeah, for what it's worth to the people who dislike him, I don't think he's supposed to be based off the Tenchi Muyo-style harem protagonist, but rather he's meant to be a throwback to Dragon Quest heroes, who were always very pure, shy, and easily embarrassed around the casino bunnygirls. This was a tradition that started with Dragon Quest III in 1988, which I think was a number of years before the so-called 'generic harem protagonist' template arose.
