Not to mention it didn't really sound like she was saying "you can't play and you can't pursue shogi period". It was more the level of commitment she was giving to the profession. Traveling huge distances to learn under someone, increasing the excessive time she gives to the game to even bigger numbers. She'd seriously under most cases be better off studying under a local master with experience teaching students. The only exception is if she can be proven to have incredible talent and potential that truly does stand a good chance of propelling her to the highest ranks. And the only evidence they have of this is the word of a single sixteen-year-old boy who has absolutely no experience working with developing students. The requirement may have been a little severe, but for the level of risk involved it's understandable that the mother would demand some seriously persuasive evidence.
