In the Buddhist philosophy, the possibility of being reincarnated as a member of the opposite gender is a real possibility. According to the Buddha, one of his past lives was as a woman. But ordinarily, a person doesn't remember his past lives so the issue of loving a soul that has reborn into the opposite gender wouldn't be much of a consideration.
