No cliche is always true. But from what I've seen on anime shows that insist on using this trick, no lovey dovey stuff gets the chance to happen. And by reset I mean shows that seem to make progress, but in the next episode it reverts back to how it was. Let's take something like the second season ending of Zero no Tsukaima:

Spoiler for Zero no Tsukaima 2nd season:

There was some sort of wedding ceremony and loads of drama. A great build up for a happy ending, but instead of a heartfelt reunion, we get a tsun-tsun comic relief ending. This effectively killed all the build up and the show goes back to harem mode in the next season.

It's an extension to the "couple getting interrupted" cliche. I call it harem reboot.
