Considering how the Yin plotline is as big as Suou/Shion plotline in Season Two, I'd say she's pretty important.
As for her personality, most of her fans love the growth she exhibited during season one. Her design also has something to do with it, but that's true of any fandom, regarding any anime character--because, you know, anime is a visual medium and their visual impact leaves a lasting impression. How much would you like Alucard if his design was some fat midget?
What I think is weird is your insistence on attacking people for liking Yin, dismissing it as nothing but otaku passion for gothic loli moeblobs. As if there's some pressing need to enlighten us about the evils of Yin-fandom.
