Getting to see Ranko's back story is nice, but I found it's a bit late in the series, if it's supposed to be one season already... unless they're already planning a second season (which I also would appreciate).
I think this episode made me like Ranko a little more.

Parents that don't know about it. The video shop keeper told him to keep it a secret from his parents. Since he has a TV and dvd player on his room, he can watch all by himself.
His father probably never thought that he would be able to get zombie movies in the first place (which he wouldn't if the shopkeeper wasn't some zombie fan), so no reason to check back on it.
