Eventually you could still do a story like that, but it requires more creativity. You need a reason why people who are exceptional at what they do can't solve the matter immediately.

also if it was during their highschool days, its pretty doable. we just make them less knowledgeable/sharp, add in internal conflicts and debate and we have a pretty decent structure.
also we have kaiki's apparent "interests"

going by speculation, there's certain points that could be addressed:

kaiki and how his romantic interests went down to. kagenui potentially finding oonoki or getting to have another familiar. meme being himself, lets say his laziness and perhaps make him a flirt, that makes it longer for him to solve.
and then we could have gaen who tests them or gives them some mission that kicks them up on their careers.
