The catch here is that this single is hyped and promoted like a regular single, being an anime theme song was more a a by-product. This has also starting to be a trend for many single. For example, OP/ED songs for mainstream anime like OP, Gundam, rarely got treated as just "anime songs"
Besides, it's not like AKB hasn't done anime songs before, one of their best selling sub group song was from the one-time group, Team Dragon's, single acted as the ED and the main theme for Dragon Ball Kai.
Here are some of past sales number of AKB's ACG related songs:
[Highest Oricon Rank/Total Sales before dropped off Chart]
2009:
No3b: Tane, ED for Birdy the Mighty Decode: 02 [#9/16,801]
2010:
Queen & Elizabeth: Love War, insert song for Kamen Rider W [#4/31,888]
Team Dragon: Kokoro no Hane, ED theme for DB Kai [#1/146,160]
2011:
No3b: Answer, 1st ED for Beelzebub [#2/108,831]
French Kiss: Kakkowarui I Love You, 1st OP for Sket Dance [#2/143,612]
2012:
Diva: Lost the Way, theme for Ultraman Saga [#3, 77,417]
Now, Tane was during 2009 when when AKB was just getting its break so the fact it still made top 10 was impressive, considering that the song had little mainstream promotion. But even then that is a pretty good figure for an anime related song.
