Considering they showed a shot of Asuna right before Kirito pulled off that Matrix thing, I'd say he did it for Asuna.
Kirito might have accepted the duel for everyone's sake. We see what he's thinking at that moment so the conclusion is easy. But at the last moment, when he was about to die, there was only one thing on his mind: Asuna.
