As I explained, that's right: you cannot get the true end in 1 run.

Based on the FAQ, I have to play parts of After Story thrice to unlock the True End. If I'm correctly interpreting iamandragon's FAQ now, it goes like this:

1. Earn 6 orbs before the Fuko route, spend 1 for her wish, and end up with 7 at the end of the School Arc.

2. Play through the After Story normally and earn 5 orbs (according to the FAQ). It gives me a total of 12, unlocking the orb for Akio. Make a save for Ushio's birth and make another for May 16.

3. Load the May 16 save, choose Akio's route to earn 13 orbs.

4. Load the save on Ushio's birth, and with 13 orbs I reach my goal of the True End.

I think that's what he meant. Esssentially I have to play critical sections of After Story 3 times achieve the True End without having to restart the After Story from the beginning.

Am I on track?

For your first point, you are not oblidged to do Fuko's route before earning X orb. As another point: you loses the orb for Fuuko only on Nagisa/Koumura's route.
Anyhow, indeed, if you want to get a proper finish, you MUST grant Fuuko's wish (as it CAN be skipped if you play Nagisa/Koumura before having any orb). and so, when you finished all school life routes, you must have 7 orbs. (Nagisa and Fuuko routes don't grant any orb, Fuuko will consume one orb, so 7 in the end, after the 10 routes of 8 orbs).

The rest is correct, this will make you able to get through After Story without starting back to square one.

Oh and one final question (sorry if I ask too much):

According to the FAQ, I should save at May 11 in Tomoyo's route and come back later if I haven't gotten Toshio's orb. Does the FAQ mean that I should stop, finish Toshio's story and come back to get Tomoyo's and Misae's orbs?

Or can I just go about finishing their stories in the suggested sequence without having to backtrack?

Koumura's orb isn't earned in Tomoyo's route. it is just a change granted if you go through Koumura, for Tomoyo's 64 hits combo.
