In war, no one is free of sin, and no side can ever be "the good guys". Even Jaeger is fighting for some pretty selfish reasons.
Damon, sure, he's a pompous jackass who'd throw another man in front of a tank just to save his skin. But no one can really say he's disloyal to Gallia.
Looking at this war in just black-and-white won't let you see very much.
