That wasn't a girl she befriended. It was actually a boy named Will (kitsura corrected me). And what goes on in this episode is that Will is trying to perfect his airplane that he was building. With the help of Solty, they manage to get the plane flying. However, and unfortunate for Solty, Will was suffering from a rare condition that causes him to spit out blood (about similar to Izumi's condition in FMA), and as a result, the plane crashes and explodes, with Will found dead in the wreckage.

Axcela had been doing research behind closed doors at RUC to find out the whereabouts of Solty. She then e-mails Uto and Miranda about it, who were still at the hunter's office at that time. Miranda confronts Roy, and becomes very emotional as she literally pounds some sense into Roy, who was now in a very low state of emotion. So, probably in the next episode, Roy will actually go out and find Solty and bring her back to the city.
