In my speculative opinion, the Shinonono's Sword School/Family is supposed to have 2 branches: One for wielding the sword (warrior), and one for the shrine (priestess). Since probably the family don't have a boy, and Tabane leave/ran away from the house, Houki has to carry the burdens. The novel described her as "Tsurugi no Miko" (Priestess of the Sword).
Probably the clash between 2 branches that made Houki somewhat violent and can easily has mood swing.
