Any of your weapons can actually damage Alex, it's just a question how badly it will affect my blocking and shielding.
Belial is very efficient at defending against energy based blasts. plasma blasts will have better effect on it though as it is the same type of energy than its shield.

As for the practice battle... I think Alex would use a Trainer IS instead (which would suck).
Well, it all depends on Babylon, and how early he plans to make Belial appear, and then Alex get the authorization to use it more often.
