Ah, been awhile since I posted. I've been writing a lot and doing my exams.

I think the shield is somewhat skin grafted (depictions kinda vary between novels), since, if I am not mistaken, Ichika got choked by the Silver Gospel while his shields still block off the hands, implying that the shields hover right above his skin (forgot which volume this is).
