Some techno-babble from Chapter 2 of Before Stratos.

It was as if a serpent darted through the air, [Orochi] fires pressurized beams which aren’t as wide as regular beam-canon shots but with higher piercing power and as a side-effect…heat.
The haze left over by the beam can still be seen lingering, the beam super-heats the air around it as it flies—creating a loud cracking noise commonly known as ‘thunder’.
