I would transpose the G note over to a different string, and play those three specific strings while muting the others. Strange how they'd make you do that on the 9th fret like that.

I'm not sure what's wrong with the second half. It looks like a power chord formation into a D chord formation, with an open E note as the root. Just create the formation, mute the other strings and play the open E. If you need to, you could take out the E root and it could still be good.
