Like some stated, Ash got too powerful for the novel at one point with the Matriarch form of Eco, so what did the author do? NERF HIM with some stupid bracelet.

The thing with Ash is that he actually progressed to get there. At the beginning of the novel, he was laughed at for not even having a dragon. By volume 4-6, he was roughly on par with Oscar and Rebecca (the strongest at the academy). By the 9-10, he was so far ahead of anyone that he could win any fight in his sleep.
