That's also unfortunately what we have seen with Alice and Hong Meiling to name two other characters completely derailed in fanon interpretations

And yet a lot of people, especially those at Sankaku, have been quick at portraying him as a control freak when he put his foot down about the Maikaze doujin ova. Myself I sympathize with ZUN's sentiments.
