My first thought was that the creator of the game isn't quite being as hands off as it may seem, though then I calmed down and thought about how weird it would be that the creator would care enough to intervene. Then, my second thought was that Heathcliff is actually the creator of the game. Then, I decided, that's probably too out there.
Regardless, Heathcliff's smile in that moment should tell us all we need to know about him. I've watched enough anime to know that that wasn't the smile of a good guy.
Nevermind the author's very obvious past in playing old-school MMOs, where leaders of "top guilds" were pretty much never actual nice people.
