I think the problem here is that anime is glorified a tad too much. Anime is an entertainment medium / business product, not some work of art. Rather, it
can be a "work of art" if the consumers
wants it as such, which is obviously not the case in modern society seeing as how
fanservice does sell. Anime adapts according to the major consumers' demands and wants; it's in no way getting "tarnished" so much as just catering to the otakus' wallets.
It's all part of natural/artificial selection.
