Spoiler for series:
You're right about the Takano thing, however there was 1 key difference in Higurashi. Each "chess board" was a reset of the world through Furude Rika's means in order to "change their destiny" The initial board conditions were based on what im assuming is character personality as well as other things (Ie, Takano being mad because of her father's failed research//Rina killing her parents//Satoshi scenario with the twins) Not only that but it has been speculated that these "dimensions" or alternate chessboards are resets of life itself, therefore all of the events coming leading up to the biological attack on the small town will be the same unless altered, which results in the different outcomes.
From what I've seen and read so far, Umineko works in a similar way. Beatrice has the power to "reset" things, but the only things that drastically change are the events taking place at the incident, and not those leading up to it. The difference is, the player is a real person who has been excused from the game board ( real life) so that he can observe through the fantasy realm. Almost like a movie if you will, where different reels are inserted after each one is concluded. What bothers me though, is the continuity of those reels and what exactly each reel means. And also, why Battler cant simply focus on one of the mysteries (IE, solving of the epitath vs. everyone dying for no reason (arc 1) but has to keep moving onto different ones by simply being frustrated. If these red truths are rules pertaining only to each arc, then won't certain characters actions be different? yes. What about their motives? No. It seems like its all a deal to shed light on characters more in depth, but that still doesn't explain why he does not simply go back and solve, say, the first arc for example.
