Yes I am quite familiar with the
rendaku phenomenon. However, the joke requires less explanation if we ignore the sound changes brought on by making it a compound word.

My apologies on these two--we don't get a very good view of the fourth kanji on Mikuru's headband or the first on Kyon's, so I extrapolated.
