They follow the same pattern, and can be annoying just the same.

For me, while the male leads being losers can definitely be annoying, the real damage comes in when the female characters start falling for him. Girls who fall for spineless wusses lose my respect and interests in them far too fast than any of their "moe" elements can earn them.
