It also helps to realize that she was a freaking young kid at the start, and she didn't understand the ramifications of showing off her power, or even the fact that she had a special power. There's nothing special about her naivety and honestly, that's just how normal kids are. It's those typical childish aspects coupled with the ESP that got her into trouble. A mature adult who suddenly got ESP in the middle of her life would likely use it more smartly/secretly.
