I do not think the man who died eating those roaches would be eligible for the Darwin Award.

The bugs used in those contests are bred in a clean environment, as pet food for exotic, expensive pets.
They do not have any venom in them, nor do they carry the hazardrous bacterial found in common roaches.

Meaning, eating those aren't really any different than eating crabs and shrimp, just a whole lot more grotesque.
There was no need for concern as a participant for fatal illness.

Most likely the man who died had a natural allergic reaction to something in those bugs, that he had no idea of.
Which can happen to anyone, had the individual not been exposed to the said chemical before.

So the death is not due to the stupidity of the contestant or the organizers.
Thus, Darwin Award would be looked over for this poor fella.
