It doesn't have to be "complex" to be right, stupendous, or gripping. It just means the directors didn't bother to fact-check the topic even when it wouldn't have hurt the story at all.
Movies with technical advisers and good research just tend to have more authentic feel and a solidity to them even if the viewer isn't consciously aware of it.
