Rika pulls thru the operation with flying colors unlike her father due
to her youth and plucky attitude.
However, Yuuichi has been doing things like taking her to the mountain
fort, going to the library for her (and other errands), avoiding the nurse
and weakening his immune system in the process. Due to lack of
sleep (all the magazines he inherited!) among other things he is more
susceptible to infection and catches pneumonia - still trying to please
Rika and staying up all night worrying during her operation he takes a
big turn for the worse.
He passes away with Rika's name on his lips.
The wedding scene is the last thing in his mind - a fantasy and nothing real.
Rika looks back and remembers often.
Kind of grim for a romantic comedy eh?
