Not quite. The anime made short of Kiroumaru's account of the events but I think he made it quite clear what happened on the battlefield.

For what it's worth, the anime over-dramatized this a bit. In the book Kiroumaru says he was 20-30 meters away from the kid so it's not like he was literally right next to him. 20-30 meters is not very far but it's not very close either.

Inui had discarded his original coat and was wearing one that he had taken from a bakenezumi he killed, which covered most of his body and his face, and masked his scent to a degree. While he's an ikemen in the anime (with Toriumi Kousuke's voice, oh yeah) he's supposed to be very short, plus he kept crying in bakenezumi language. Add to this that it was dark, and he managed to pass for a bakenezumi - only barely, but it was enough to keep him alive.

Basically, Inui is just a very lucky bastard. Too lucky? Maybe, but if he died we wouldn't have a story, so...
